Khruangbin has been on my radar ever since they appeared on Bonobo’s Late Night Tales album (also a fantastic collection) with their track “A Calf Born in Winter.” They have a sound I have yet to find in any other band in my musical collection.
Driving home from work tonight listening to music on random on my phone and Poe’s ‘Wild’ came on and instantly took me back. I picked up the ‘Haunted‘ CD as an impulse buy while I was picking up U2’s ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ at Fry’s in Wilsonville, OR, early November 2000. I can still remember the day- I was a contract graphic designer at Xerox spending my lunch hours killing time at Fry’s.
I was invited to sample the menu at Pine Shed Ribs and Barbecue in Lake Oswego. The owner, Matt Ramey, hails from my hometown-San Luis Obispo, CA. He learned how to grill Santa Maria style barbecue in his youth and adds his own twist by adding a little smoke to his version.
Today was one of those weird days as best laid workout plans were quashed by an IT emergency at my desk that lasted through the lunch hour. When it was all said and done, my usual lunch partners were long gone so I was on my own.
Chicken and Guns opened about 3 weeks ago. They feature locally sourced chickens roasted over white oak and mesquite. Their inspiration came to them from roadside vendors roasting chickens in Mexico. Continue reading
