[Unfortunately this cart has bid adios to the downtown scene but their cart on the east side is alive and well.]
Just a quick post to let you know about a fantastic, relatively new cart downtown. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Güero. Güero has an established cart on the east side (see my Burrasca post for another review in the same pod) and opened up in downtown PDX a few months ago in the 10th Avenue cart area.
They offer three varieties of tortas: Pork Carnitas, Pollo Pibil and Refrito (vegetarian). Also, lots of great sides you can add as options such as Cotija, a variety of fresh roasted peppers and more. I was chatting with a Güero gentlemen earlier this week about spicy chiles and the lack of heat in Portland. He promised me that my added chiles would rock my world and they sure did. They take their spice seriously.
I think I’ve been 3 or 4 times, tried both meat options and have ALWAYS walked away satisfied. It may take an extra minute for your torta to arrive but you will be justly rewarded. They offer a carrot-habanero sauce on the side-take it, it’s good for you.
Bring a few napkins and get ready for a fiesta in your mouth. The food is delicious, clean and always beautifully assembled. If you jump on it quick, you can catch a very special BLT special they are running over at their cart on SE 28th. It was featured here in Portland Monthly Magazine.
Any torta aficionados out there? I’d love to explore more tortas. Where’s your fave?
